The velogemel is a fascinating winter transportation invention that offers wintersports fans an extraordinary way to explore the snow-covered landscapes of the Interlaken region. This unique wooden vehicle, a cross between a bicycle, sled, and skis, was originally patented in 1911 by Christian Bühlmann in the charming village of Grindelwald and ever since has mesmerized snow sledders in Switzerland and beyond. And you can try to ride a velogemel now as well….
What is a Velogemel?
A velogemel is a wooden snow bike with two runners and a handlebar, allowing riders to navigate snowy terrain in a way that’s both traditional and thrilling. It’s a one-of-a-kind mode of transportation that originated in Grindelwald and remains unique to this Alpine Swiss village at the foot of the fabled Eiger North face.
The term Velogemel itself is derived from two words: “velo,” which is the French word for bicycle and commonly used in Swiss German, and “gemel,” a local dialect term for sled. This combination aptly describes the vehicle’s design and function, which allows riders to sit upright and use their legs for balance while gliding over snow-covered terrain on two runners instead of wheels
Guided Velogemel Adventures
Visitors to the Interlaken region can experience this extraordinary activity through guided tours in the Jungfrau region above Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen & Mürren. To start your adventure you will get a safety briefing after which you practise riding this wooden snow bike on a gentle slope. After a bit of practise you will get the hang of steering, gliding and braking the velogemel and that is the sign for us to take a cable car up to much longer track where you will experience the thrill of riding this unique sledding bicycle.
